As part of the Hanson Center’s spring programming on The Culture of STEM, Dr. Mary Blair-Loy (University of California, San Diego) will give a talk on her latest book, “Misconceiving Merit: Paradoxes of Excellence and Devotion among Academic Scientists and Engineers” (with Erin Cech). Professor Blair-Loy will share findings, based on data on more than 500 STEM professors, about the cherished cultural ideas of merit in academic science that produce distorted metrics and unfair and unequal outcomes that are bad for faculty and bad for science.
